Why Antique Lamps May Fail
When it comes to the restoration of an antique lamp, they most often fail due to four common reasons. These reasons are:
- faulty socket
- old wiring
- bad switch
- loose connection
Replacing some or all of these parts is often manageable. Especially when you turn to the team at Luis Restorations.
Lamp Finishing
Lamp restoration is simply the process of bringing a lamp as close as possible to its original condition. This includes both structural and finish repair work. Finish restoration is the process of bringing an existing finish back to life by using original solvents. Original solvents are used, because they do a much better job of penetrating and adhering to the new finish. This is opposed to using any new solvents in the process, which may not come out as well. Finish restoration also involves the removal of any dirt or grime that was accumulated over the years. Additional layers of the finish may be applied to bolster the restored finish and allow for better longevity. The goal of any lamp restoration process is to keep as much of the original finish as possible.
Removing Rust From Lamps
Removing rust is another crucial aspect of our lamp restoration services, which is a problem that can happen to iron lamps over time. The oxygen in the air reacts with the iron to form iron oxide or rust, which is corrosion. It is important to combat this issue quickly, because rust spreads rapidly and can damage the surface and the structure of the metal.
The rust removal process starts by identifying the rusted areas on the lamp. Spray WD-40 onto the surface and rub the rusty surface with a rough sponge, because this will slowly remove some of the rust. However, there may be some rust under the paint. This means the paint needs to be removed and can be done with sandpaper. Once the surface of the metal lamp is visible, you can gently remove any of the remaining rust with a metal file.
